Strike/Lockout Support

Picketline Solidarity goes well beyond simply not crossing picket lines. Picketline solidarity is the heart and soul of trade unionism. It says we're all in this fight for workers together, and picketline solidarity contributes greatly to shortening labour disputes. The chair of the NDDLC support committee is Jim Sadlemyer, and other committee members include
John Little, Lucy Oxman, Ross Gano, and Debbie Fraess. They can be reached through the labour council at 250-753-0201, or by email at labour@telus.net.

Other Things You Can Do

Sometimes it's the little things that help a union hang in and get a successful resolution. Things like:

  • Tell people in your own union what's going on, and what the issues are. Make the link between strong unions and the quality of life in your community.
  • Organize demonstrations and rallies .
  • Attend strike support rallies and demonstrations.
  • Stay informed. Beware of media coverage that is anti-labour.
  • Make donations to the strikers. Being on strike is costly.
  • Join the picket lines. Picketers love support. Inform the picket captain that you are on the picket line and which organization you represent.
  • Make donations in kind to the picket line. Coffee, donuts, food, fire wood, and whatever else is needed and requested.
  • Take a picketer out to lunch.
  • Call your MLA or city councillor. Tell them that you support the strikers.
  • Write a letter to the editor.
  • Phone a call-in radio show.
  • Honk your horn when you drive by a picket line.
  • Establish a food bank.
  • Organize an end-of-week social for the picketers; on the picket line or in a nearby hall.
  • Hug a picketer!
